  • HOW TO KEEP A HEALTHY TREE HEALTHY

This year's drought has reminded us of the importance of deep fertilization.

Trees are adapted to the highly organic, fertile, and porous soils found in woods. They are poorly adapted to the dense, infertile, low porosity soils we find in the lawns in our area. In woods, leaves and limbs fall to the ground and decompose to provide organic matter, humic acids, and free nutrients; all of which are beneficial to a tree's growth and health. This is called nutrient recycling. In lawns, we eliminate this recycling by raking off most, if not all, organic material every year.  As time passes, trees eventually use up a significant potion of whatever nutrients were originally available to them in our clay soils.

Eventually, the poor soil conditions begin to have a negative effect on lawn trees. They become "stressed", even if they look OK. Stress causes them to become more susceptible to a variety of problems including, disease, borer attack, and drought.

Modern fertilizers, such as the types we use, can be formulated to, not only, increase the available nutrients in the soil for up to two years, but they can also add humic acids and other tree friendly compounds.

By comparison, clients who regularly have us deep fertilize their trees have a considerably lower incidence of tree mortality then those who don't.

If you would like more information on our slow released organic deep fertilization program please ask.
